BASIC JIU JITSU HISTORY


It is important to understand some Jiu Jitsu History to have knowledge of how the sport originated, where it came from and the history of the Martial Art. Here is some basic history and interesting facts for you to learn:


  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu originally came from the Martial Art of Judo which was founded in Japan
  • The art Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in Brazil by The Gracie family, most notably Carlos and Helio Gracie 
  • Mistuyo Maeda learned the art of BJJ and took it to Brazil to form the foundations we now have today
  • Carlos Gracie was the first Gracie to learn the art
  • Helio Gracie, Oswaldo Fadda and Luiz Franca are also considered some of the original founders of BJJ
  • The first ever Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class was held in Rio De Janeiro
  • Daniel Lima started Fight Club Jiu Jitsu here in Australia in 2003, with the head academy being at Miami Gold Coast
  • Other Countries that include Fight Club Jiu Jitsu are: Brazil, Portugal and United States
  • UFC 1 was considered the pinnacle for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it tested different martial arts seeing which was the most effective in a real fight situation, it showed that leverage was more important than strength and helped to spread the culture of BJJ
  • Some moves in Jiu Jitsu are specifically named after the person who created it, such as:
  • – The Kimura Lock created by masahiko kimura
  • – Ezekial Choke created by Ezequiel Paraguassu 
  • – Del La Riva Guard created by Ricardo De La Riva
  • The word “Jiu Jitsu” directly translates to the japansese word of ‘gentle art’
  • Jiu Jitsu’s ultimate aim is to submit your opponent
