Basic Competition Rules

In Jiu Jitsu it is important to understand how the point systems work for competitions. Regardless of being a competitor or not. Here are the basic things you need to know regarding competition rules/ point system:

  • Mount – 4 points
  • Back control/mount – 4 points
  • Guard pass – 3 points
  • Guard sweep – 2 points
  • Knee on belly – 2 points
  • Take down – 2 points

As you can see the most dominate positions are worth the highest value of points. There are no points awarded for: Side control, Kesa Gatame, or other positions in between. Points are only awarded for the above listed positions or for the action of passing/sweeping from guard.

Positions must be stabilised for 3 seconds before a point is awarded.

Advantages are given when a submission attempt with real danger has been applied but not successful. Advantages are also awarded in situations that a position is almost achieved but not stabilised for 3 seconds. Or a guard sweep attempt or guard pass attempt without stabilisation.

Fighting Area: The Jiu Jitsu mat space for a competition is a standard size of 8x8m. However this can vary depending on the federation of the competition

Winning Decision: In Jiu Jitsu competitions can NEVER DRAW.
Bouts will be decided by: Points or Submission

If both athletes have equal points at the end of the match, the scoring will be determined by who has the most advantages. If there are no advantages or they are also equal, the next step will be to identify if any athlete has a penalty. The athlete with the most penalties (in the situation that it is a draw) will loose and his/her opponent will be declared the winner.

If there are no advantages or penalties and both scores are completely equal, the winner will be determined by referees decision.

Disqualification occurs through either an illegal move, multiple penalties or a sever foul, where in this circumstance the opponent will be declared the winner.
