Parents know that raising kids is always a challenge and that as our kids grow we try to choose the best for them, the best schools, the best sports.

These days one other thing that goes through parents’ minds is their children’s security. Many of us are finding that it’s getting harder to spend as much time as we’d like to with our kids, and many parents are choosing to put their kids in martial arts in the hope they will gain some key life skills like discipline, focus and co-ordination.

Martial arts training is a great way for children to learn all those things. Personally I also think that the most important skill that children take away from martial arts training is the ability to protect themselves.

So then comes the question, “which martial art is better for my child?”

I would say firstly that all martial arts bring great benefits to children. But over the years I have seen that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stands out in its ability to provide children with skills that they will carry with them for life.

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Like other martial arts Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will provide a child with the skills of discipline, co-ordination, social skills, focus and self-confidence. However, BJJ also offers your child some other, very unique skills:

1-With BJJ children can defend themselves with out striking anyone. You would probably prefer to have your child defend themselves at school without striking another kid and getting in trouble right? BJJ teaches kids how to control and handle an opponent without the need to strike.

2- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has as one of its main components the ability to generate leverage. This is very useful in a case where your child needs to get away from an adult or another kid who is much stronger and bigger.

3- BJJ teaches the very important skills of how to fall and roll safely. Unfortunately falls are one of the most common accidents that affect children, tree climbing, playing footy, skateboarding, bike riding, running and playing other sports, all these activities involve the risk of falling. The ability to fall and roll safely can decrease the chances of your child getting hurt or more seriously injured when a fall does occur.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will bring great benefits to your children and getting going is as easy as looking for a school near you. Often schools offer trial classes and this can be a great way to get your kid started on the amazing BJJ journey.
